The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has undertaken a technical needs assessment in Rubirizi Area as part of efforts to improve water supply, optimise treatment processes and strengthen the performance of key water infrastructure serving communities in the area.
The assessment, led by Senior Manager Water Quality Dr. Babu, focused on interventions required to complete the ongoing Kabaseke Water Supply Project, improve operations at Kakindo Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and enhance the performance of Bururuma WTP.
During the field visit, the team inspected Kakindo WTP, which has a capacity of 200m³, and the 120m³ Kabaseke Reservoir before proceeding to the ongoing Kabaseke Booster Station project.
The booster station is being developed to abstract and pump water from Kakindo WTP and forms an important part of efforts to strengthen water supply within the Katerera Branch. The project includes a 60m³ sump and pump house, together with the 120m³ Katanda Reservoir.
The assessment established that several components are still required before the project can be fully operational. These include a power connection, electrical and mechanical installations, pumping equipment, as well as the pumping and return mains.
Once completed, the Kabaseke Water Supply Project is expected to improve the movement and distribution of water within the system, strengthening supply reliability and service delivery to customers in Katerera and surrounding communities.
At Kakindo WTP, the team reviewed the existing treatment processes and plant operations, identifying areas where improvements can be made to enhance treatment efficiency and maximise the use of the available infrastructure.
The interventions are expected to improve plant performance and enable the system to respond more effectively to growing water demand in the area.
The technical team also visited Bururuma WTP and its raw water intake at Lake Rutoto. The plant has a treatment capacity of approximately 1,000m³ per day and plays an important role in water production for the area.
The visit provided an opportunity to assess the plant’s operational status, production and treatment performance, while identifying challenges that may be limiting its efficiency. The findings will inform interventions aimed at improving production and strengthening service delivery.
Dr. Babu commended the team for the work being undertaken in Rubirizi and emphasised the need for continued collaboration between technical and operational teams to address challenges affecting water production and supply.
He noted that optimising existing infrastructure, alongside completing ongoing projects, remains critical to improving treatment efficiency and ensuring more reliable water supply for customers.
The assessment brought together Area Manager Golden Rusasi, Area Engineer Justus Nuwamanya, Branch Manager Katerera Mucunguzi Gadson, Water Quality Officer Asingwire Collins, Manager Static Plant Eng. Ayeni and Regional Engineer Rehema Nannozi, alongside Dr. Babu.
The findings from the field exercise will guide the technical interventions required to complete the Kabaseke project, improve the performance of Kakindo and Bururuma treatment plants, and strengthen the overall water supply system in Rubirizi.
