In an effort to bridge the gap between development and community interests, the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) held a community meeting in Kinawataka on July 12th, 2024 to address concerns over recent eviction exercises on its gazetted land, with hopes of fostering dialogue and finding amicable solutions.
The 3.1-kilometer stretch of land in Kinawataka was designated for a vital sewer line project. During a thorough audit and verification process, NWSC identified 95 encroachers, including households, churches, schools, and a nightclub. While some residents chose to voluntarily demolish their structures, others felt unjustly treated and sought intervention from their Member of Parliament, Hon. Eng. Ronald Balimwezo.
Hon. Eng. Ronald Balimwezo, representing Nakawa East, chaired the meeting, which saw the participation of key stakeholders such as NWSC’s Manager for Pro-Poor Services & Community Collaboration – JB Otema, Manager Security – Mr. Waa Byamukama, and several affected residents. The gathering was a platform for the residents to voice their grievances and for NWSC to echo its commitment to addressing legitimate concerns.
NWSC’s Manager for Pro-Poor Services & Community Collaboration – JB Otema addressed the attendees and made it clear that passage for sewer mains is all NWSC wants, clearly stipulating that the corporation requires 3 meters on either side on the intended site. Therefore, not all buildings are to be destroyed.
He also stated that there will be a follow-up meeting to resolve individual concerns, and ensure that every household gets maximum attention from NWSC. Mr. Otema however warned them against the dangers of living near a main sewer line, describing the lethal toxic nature of waste, especially in case of a burst.
Hon. Balimwezo agreed with NWSC and said he would be part of the verification exercise with the corporation as well as other local leaders.
