On June 29, 2024, the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) hosted a comprehensive training session at the IREC-Bugolobi, bringing together drivers and staff from the transport department. This full-day event, organized by the Training and Capacity Development team, aimed to address workplace challenges and enhance operational efficiency.
The event, spearheaded by Senior Manager Joyce Bakiire and coordinated by Principal Trainer David Opoka and Opedun Peter Mark, was a testament to NWSC’s commitment to professional development. The day’s activities were meticulously planned, ensuring a successful outcome by the end of the session.
A highlight of the training was the presentation of a new Fleet Management System by the Applications Development team. Although still under development, this system promises to revolutionize fleet handling within the corporation. It aims to provide comprehensive solutions, including details on the total number of vehicles, their types, usage, driver assignments, and vehicle conditions. The system also focuses on vehicle requests, assignments, approvals, daily journey logs, and fuel management, utilizing in-house developed digital tools for web and mobile platforms to optimize costs and ensure peak performance of each vehicle.
The IT team integrated advanced maintenance tracking and mapping features into the system, enhancing transparency and operational excellence. This in-house solution not only meets industry standards but also sets new benchmarks for efficiency and effectiveness within the corporation.
Director of Human Resources, Ms. Eunice Alanyo, officially launched the event, expressing her gratitude to the organizing team for their exemplary execution and to top management and the Board of Directors for their unwavering support. She commended the IT team for their efforts in digitizing the corporation’s operations, particularly with the new Fleet Management System. “Digitization is crucial in our corporate plan, as highlighted by the Auditor General’s Office in a recent audit,” she emphasized.
Ms. Alanyo also encouraged staff to apply for job opportunities within the corporation to avoid missing out on potential career advancements. She urged employees to enroll in the provident fund and practice financial discipline by saving for the future. Additionally, she highlighted key points from the HR manual, including dress code, professionalism, effective communication, and the appraisal system.
The training session also focused on personal development and branding for the drivers. They were encouraged to maintain proper personal hygiene and cleanliness in their duties. Emphasis was placed on customer care, with staff advised to practice self-discipline and recognize the privilege of their positions. They were reminded to use their opportunities wisely and plan for retirement while still employed. Enrollment in the Workers’ PAS program was encouraged, as it offers a fully certified course with potential for future recognition at the university level.
Other facilitators at the event included Col. Sarah Mpabwa on self-discipline, Col. Robert Kagahe on traffic offenses and penalties, Joyce Bakiire on driver etiquette and vehicle upkeep, Manager Commercial Apollo Arinaitwe on customer service, Manager Communications and Marketing Jon Fisher Sekabira on communication skills and confidentiality, and Incharge Motor Vehicle Workshop Eng. Anthony Mathias Arembe on maintenance costs.
The training concluded with a lively Q&A session, where staff interacted with facilitators, seeking guidance on various topics. The event was capped off with a group photo session, marking the end of a successful and enlightening day.
In a single day, NWSC reaffirmed its dedication to staff development and operational excellence, setting the stage for a future driven by innovation and efficiency.
