In response to Kampala City’s pressing sanitation issues, the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), through its Sewerage Services Directorate, convened a meeting with the Kampala Capital City Authority’s (KCCA) Physical Planning Directorate on June 14th, 2024.

The assembly, attended by key stakeholders such as Mr. Vincent Biribonwa Byendaimira, Director of Physical Planning at KCCA-Dr. Daniel Okello, NWSC’s Chief Manager of Sewerage Services-Eng. James Miiro Maiteki, and NWSC’s Eng. Angelo Kwitonda, aimed to address the city’s critical sanitation infrastructure needs.

A primary focus of the meeting was the NWSC’s sewer infrastructure plans. As Kampala experiences rapid business growth and an increasing demand for new sewer connections, the necessity for a comprehensive strategy to manage and expand the sewer network is becoming increasingly urgent.

Significant discussions were held on wayleave management, the sharing of information for city infrastructure, and collaboration in physical plans approvals. The meeting hinted on the need for synergies and collaboration between NWSC and KCCA as a key strategy to tackle Kampala’s sanitation challenges effectively.

Another important topic was the integration of utility legislation and by-laws to ensure the effective management and regulation of sewer systems. The participants identified the Sewage and Faecal Sludge Management Ordinance of 2019 as a crucial tool for improving sanitation standards and protecting public health in the city.

This collaborative effort between the NWSC and KCCA is bound to leverage the expertise and resources of both entities, and in the long run improve the quality of life for residents and mitigate the impact of poorly managed sewer infrastructure.

NWSC remains dedicated to “Water and Sanitation for all”.
