BULENGA BRANCH’S COLLABORATIVE APPROACH TOWARDS FIGHT AGAINST UTILITY THEFT

In response to the troubling surge in meter theft incidents within the Bulenga branch, a proactive alliance has been forged between local leaders and the Kampala Water (KW) security team, spearheaded by Mr. Elly Muhumuza and Mr. Rashid.

Recent investigations have unveiled a concerning trend of meter theft, particularly in the Buloba sub-branch, with a distressing count of 14 stolen meters reported in January 2024 alone. Despite concerted efforts, apprehending the perpetrators has proven to be a daunting task, compounded by the challenge of identifying individuals from captured surveillance footage.

Prompt action has been taken by victims of meter theft, with most incidents promptly reported to the police. One exceptional case saw the theft reported directly to the National Water and Sewerage Corporation, prompting swift disconnection and proper burial of the stolen meter service lines.

In a proactive move to address the escalating issue, Bulenga branch, in collaboration with LC 1 Chairman-Bwotansimbi, has strategized comprehensive measures to combat meter theft. Central to these plans is the organization of a village sensitization meeting that brought together O.C Buloba, local leaders, NWSC staff, and the community at large to bolster awareness and vigilance.

More to it, the introduction of new staff to customers was done and this aims to expedite identification processes, ensuring swift response to any suspicious activity. Contact details of NWSC-KW staff of the branch were shared with the LC 1 Chairman to facilitate seamless communication channels.

Under the leadership of the Acting Branch Manager, Ms. Patience, Branch Engineer, Mr. Kinta, and Technical Supervisor, Mr. Mishaki, alongside the security team, field visits were conducted to assess the extent of accounts affected by meter theft. A concerted effort is underway to maintain meticulous records of stolen meters, with the Branch Engineer overseeing actions taken to prevent leaks and unauthorized usage, in close collaboration with the Inventory Officer to ensure seamless coordination.

Bulenga branch is poised to stem the tide of utility theft, and safeguard the interests of both the community and NWSC through ongoing collaboration and vigilance, of course.
